My cat has a new white spot on its head. Is it normal or serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Male | neutered | 5 years and 5 months old | 10 lbs

Yesterday I noticed a little white spot on my cat's head. It is not scaly, red, or lumpy. I was wondering what could this be?

It looks like a normal variety in the pigment of Dusty's skin. I would not be worried about it, but if you feel it really wasn't there a week ago, you may discuss biopsy with your veterinarian. Rarely, a small amount of depigmented skin can be diagnosed as cancer.

Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is hard to know for sure but this is likely a normal pigmentation change. If it is not associated with itchiness or discomfort, there is no need to be concerned about this. If you ever notice any discomfort or itchiness, have her evaluated by your veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Good luck and have a great day!
