My dog has worms. Are humans at risk? How do I clean my home and car?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pit Bull Terrier | Male | neutered | 3 years and 5 months old | 60 lbs

This morning I found that my landlord's dog who adopted me against my will, has worms. After he's been in my room in my car and all over the house. I had pinworms once and I was a little and I'm terrified to go back into the house at all. I'm not sure what to clean, how to clean it or where to start. Hes not even mine but my landlord's too lazy to take care of him. Can I even get into my car? I know how contagious they can be.

There are intestinal parasites that are contagious to humans. These are hookworms and roundworms. They are contagious via fecal oral contact. Cleaning with regular cleaning products should take care of the problem. And also washing your hands before you eat. I have been in the veterinary profession for 16 years and have never gotten parasites myself. More than likely as long as you're cleaning regularly and washing your hands, you should be OK. Good luck!
