Dog anal gland infection with pus, antibiotics not working. What now?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 11 years and 10 months old | 24.5 lbs

My Schnoodle has pus coming from her anal glands. Took her to a vet and was given antibiotics - Amoxyclav 500mg tablet; half a table every 12 hours until finished. Followed this to the letter and there has been no improvement. Where to from here?

Place an e-collar (cone) on Smugde to prevent any licking. Have her rechecked by your veterinarian. The anal glands should be expressed and flushed. Afterwards, medication can be instilled directly into the glands. Before all this, consider obtaining a sample to submit for culture and sensitivity panels. This may identify the responsible organism as well as the best antibiotic to use in treatment.
