My dog has a black foot growth for years. Is it serious? Vet visit?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | German Shepherd | Female | spayed | 11 years old | 60 lbs

My German Shepard has had this black growth on her foot for years. It's slowly growing, but it's reached a considerable size. It hasn't been affecting her in anyway, so I was wondering if it should be something I should bring her to a doctor. I'd like to find out what it is first, if it's not anything serious.

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! This could be a benign or malignant growth. Given the length it has been present, it likely represents something benign though you will not know until it is sampled. This is most of the time differentiated with a test called a fine needle aspirate which is easy, cheap and pain-free. Sometimes, a biopsy is required for a diagnosis. Have Latte evaluated by your veterinarian to have this test performed to try to sort out what the diagnosis is so that the best course of action can be determined. If it is a malignant tumor that warrants surgery, it is better to find out sooner rather than later. Keeping my fingers crossed that it is something benign!
