When should I spay my new female puppy & prevent old dog's disease?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Golden Labrador | Female | unspayed | 5 years and 5 months old | 80 lbs

My female dog laika passed away due to an infected uterus , we want to have a new female Labrador , we don't want to take any risks with her ,will spraying/nutered her at age of 6-8 months have a bad effect on her health as she would never have pups can this cause hormonal imbalance in her . My old dog laika also had tick fever ( babesia ), as my vet told she became a permanent host of that protozoa , what measures should i take in cleaning the house so that my new pet won't catch that disease.

I Would advise spaying during that time to have the best protection form pyometra (infection of the uterus) and reproductive tract cancers. I would wait for at least a month until you bring a new dog into th home. I would wash all bedding, or replace it. Babesia is transferred from ticks or from blood to blood transfusion between dogs, for example in a bite. So the likelihood of transmission is low. Treat your new puppy for ticks prior to bringing it home to be on the safe side.
