My cat has stud tail with blackheads and hair loss. Will it grow back?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 1 year and 7 months old | 8 lbs

My cat seems to have stud tail. Initially I saw black deposit and loss of hair and took him to the vet for which the vet prescribed maggoticidal spray which didn't solve the problem. (We do not have good vets here.) His tail is now filled with blackheads. He doesn't seem to be in pain. i started cleaning his tail with antibacterial shampoo that contains chlorhexidine, twice a day and mupirosin ointment. Is it a severe case that'll need futher treatment? Will the hair grow back?

Hi and thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The washing and ointments should help tremendously. The hair should grow back but it will take time. The other recommendation is neutering Toby. Good luck and kisses to Toby!

Hi there. Sometimes I have found it useful to clip the hair shorter and use antibacterial shampoos on the area for mild cases-for more complicated ones I have used oral antibiotics in patients as well as the aforementioned. Neutering is usually something I also recommend at this time. Topical triple antibiotic ointment can be used for the "sore" areas as well (if it is bad enough that there are some)-just make sure your pet does not eat or groom any of it off. If the condition persists or worsens, please seek veterinary care for prescription medications to help with the issue. I hope he feels better soon!
