You can do weekly baths in a medicate shampoo and add an omega 3 fatty acid supplement with fish oils to the food daily to help the hair coat. If he scratches or has excessive hair loss, you may need to see a vet to see if there is an underlying skin infection.

You can recognize dandruff by seeing in on the haircoat (white flaky specs). And you can help promote a healthy haircoat and skin by the following: 1) Feeding a high quality dog food (based on your pets age- puppy, adult, senior- Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Evo, Eukanuba, Wellness, etc), 2) Daily fish oils- add omega 3's and is a natural anti-inflammatory for skin, 3) Treat for any underlying diseases that affect the skin- a vet visit is needed to rule out underlying disorders such as allergic dermatitis, endocrine disorders (hypothyroidism or Cushing's disease), etc). Best wishes with your pet Research and his skin. Take care.

Oscar’s dandruff could be due to seasonal allergies, a food not high enough in fatty acids or fats, or hormonal changes as he is aging. Two brands of dog food are better for dogs with dandruff and these are Nutro and Royal Canin. You may try switching him to these diets and it will take about a month to take affect. You can also start him on an omega-3 fatty acid supplement for dogs and this will also help in about a month. Bathing him in an oatmeal type shampoo will help to moisturize the skin as well. I hope this helps and please feel free to post any additional questions.

It sounds like you're doing everything right. You have him on a great quality food and are adding more salmon oil to make sure he has enough EPA and DHA in his diet. Have you had your vet evaluate his skin? I wonder if he may have something like seborrhea? Sometimes dandruff can be due to dry skin, but it sounds like he should have plenty of good oils in his skin and coconut oil didn't help. Sometimes dogs have dandruff because the skin is producing too many skin cells and they flake off creating dandruff. The solution to the later is an anti-seborrheic shampoo. Here is more information about seborrhea. https://www.veterinarypartner.com/Content.plx?P=A&S=0&C=0&A=1561 I would recommend having your vet evaluate Ollie. If they can't find any other reason for the dandruff, I would discuss trying an anti-seborrheic shampoo. Good luck! I hope that was helpful! Thanks for using PetCoach.
