Cat scratched my puppy. Can he get rabies if too young for vaccine?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Yorkshire Terrier | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 19 days old | 3 lbs

Me and my pup of ten weeks were attacked by a cat. The pup was scratched under eye and we removed cats nail there. I was bitten and scratched. Cats owners can't produce vaccination certificate. I am on anti rabies treatment as precaution. Pup too young for rabisin injection. Is it possible he could be protected at least a little against possible rabies. He wasn't bitten but I'm still concerned. He did receive antibiotics for the scratch. Still waiting for authorities to respond to the incident.

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry this happened to you and Smokey. If you were bitten make sure you talk to your doctor about antibiotics as well. If Smokey's mother was vaccinated he should be protected from his mother's immunity. Unfortunately the rabies vaccine isn't licensed for puppies younger than 16 weeks of age. You can discuss with your vet about the risks of vaccinating at a younger age, and ask if they can call/contact the company that makes the vaccines to discuss pros/cons in terms of risks about whether or not to give a booster at a younger age. Best of luck with Smokey!
