How to give liquid medicine to my cat without it entering lungs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Ok. So I have to administer an entire dropperfull of liquid medicine (ClinDrops) to my cat orally. I read somewhere that a cat may absorb liquid to his lungs if you add it too quick. Is this true? I've never had to do this before. ---------------------------------------------------------------- (This is my first and only pet, so I have no experience with this.)

As long as Cookie is alert and swallowing when you administer the liquid medication, the risk of it getting into the lungs is low. If he's not able to swallow or is very lethargic and not responding, I would not give him the medication by mouth because he isn't able to protect his airway and the medication could be inhaled into his lungs. If this is the case, he needs to be seen by a veterinarian right away.
