My cat has new dark spots on his nose after neutering. Should I worry?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 10 months and 20 days old | 13 lbs

11 mo. Old Male cat was neutered last Wednesday and has dark spots on end of his nose that have never been there before and when I attempted to clean it off nothing happened. What could this be?? And should I be concerned?

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! It is hard to know without being able to look at the lesions you describe. However, some cats can develop pigmentation or lack thereof in the nose which could be normal. This is not related to the surgery and it is unlikely to be something to be concerned about. If it does not appear to be a lesion or it does not appear to be bothering Happy, I would just have your veterinarian take a look at it next time Happy is due for an check up. Good luck!

Unless the area is causing any problems, I would not say it is a cause for immediate concern. Without biopsy of the affected region, you cannot know for sure unfortunately, but it is not at all uncommon to see pigment changes on the skin, nose, or paw pads as animals continue to grow and age. Hope this makes sense.
