My cat is vomiting, not eating, breathing fast. Is it an emergency?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 3 years and 10 months old | 10 lbs

My cat hasn't eaten since this morning (it's 22:33 ATM). He regurgitated the food, didn't digest it at all. I dunno if he has drank any water. His pupils are very dilated. I called the vet and he said to remove the food for some hours. I did, but he doesn't even try to drink water and has vomited some brownish water with food remains. He seems to be agitated, breaths fast but maybe it's cause he just puked. He's always been really healthy and ok. I'm tempted to bother the vet but it's so late

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I definitely understand your concern. Vomiting and inappetence are concerning symptoms as they could occur with things like a gastrointestinal obstruction, pancreatitis, inflammatory bowel disease, dietary indiscretion, among many other possibilities. The fact that he is also breathing fast is also concerning. I recommend that you have Pedrito evaluated by a veterinarian for further assessment and treatment. Hoping for a speedy recovery!
