Why is my dog's skin dry, oily, itchy, and smelly after a bath?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | neutered | 40 lbs

I have a two year lab/pit bull mix. I gave him a bath about three weeks ago. After I gave him a bath his skin got very very dry and he started itching and licking himself. Now his skin is really oily and he is continuing to itch and lick himself. He kinda smells a little different, nothing terrible but he has a different smell. Other than that he is a very healthy dog and acts as he always did. Do you have any suggestions?

I would advise trying an oatmeal bath to calm his skin, or perhaps a soothing gentle baby shampoo. Then try not to bathe him very frequently. Baths generally should be done infrequently as they remove the natural oils In a dogs skin which keep it healthy.
