My dog has a small, non-bleeding fight wound. Can I treat it at home?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Blue Heeler | Male | neutered | 0 lbs

My dog has a dime size open wound from a dog fight. The other dog has updated shots. It is above the joint on the front leg, on a muscle-y area. It is not bleeding and no pus. It happened today. He is in no noticable pain and acting completely himself. Is this something I can treat and cover at home?

Ideally, Miko should be examined by your veterinarian. He may not be painful now, but tomorrow he may be. The wound should be cleaned and flushed. Antibiotics and pain management may both be indicated. Monitor for bleeding, discharge, swelling, redness, odor, lethargy or lameness.
