My healthy dog is a picky eater and won't eat. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Bulldog | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 2 months old

Jax is a very picky eater, some days he'll eat his breakfast and dinner in one sitting, but other days it's almost like we have to force him to eat cause he won't eat at all. He weighs 57lbs and my vet says he is very healthy. He is being fed dry dog food and has been since he was a puppy. I've tried changing his food to a different flavor but it didn't change his appetite. Is there anything I can do to make him eat his food?

Although it can be frustrating and concerning if Jax doesn't eat his food consistently, if he's at a healthy weight and doesn't have other signs of illness such as vomiting, diarrhea, lethargy or weight loss, then it's probably nothing to be concerned about. Some dogs prefer eating only once a day. You could add something healthy to his food such as canned pumpkin puree, green beans, or low-sodium chicken broth to see if this makes him eat more readily.
