My dog's eye is scratched, swollen, and he won't open it. What to do?

My dog eye got scratch and I need to know how to take care of it?? I can't afford a vet visit right now. It's a little swollen and I can't get good picture because he won't open his eye.

Unfortunately you cannot treat it in an efficient way without seeing a vet, the eye needs to be checked, if there is a scratch on the cornea Rocky will need two types of drops (corneal repair drop and antibiotic drop) in order for the eye to heal, those drops are prescription only. if left untreated he could lose the eye.

    I am sorry to hear that Elvis isn’t healing the way we would hope. Some dogs will develop a non healing ulcer , Also called an indolent ulcer of the cornea. If this is the problem then a short surgical procedure to debride the cornea called a keratotomy will usually aid in getting it to heal. I would encourage you to schedule a follow up appointment with your veterinarian soon. Best of luck and I hope he heals quickly. Thank you for using Pet Coach.

Of my dog has a swollen capalary does she need to be seen by a vet or need medication for it to get better?
It looks like Roxy has had some sort of trauma to the cornea of her eye. Maybe a small scratch or puncture. She should see a veterinarian as soon as possible for an exam. She should be prescribed a topical antibiotic for the eye. She may need other treatment but your veterinarian can determine that.

My dog has some problem with his eye, he is not able to open his eye
Rocky could have injured his eye or has a severe eye infection. Any eye problem needs to be checked out by a vet promptly as leaving it untreated can lead to vision loss. I'd take him into a vet today.

It seems like your dog has a corneal ulceration, which requires an immediate check up and treatment. The check up is essential to be able to determine the depth of the ulceration and decide appropriate treatment. Eye drops versus surgery are the two treatment options. My coonhound gets droopy eyes with a lot of gunk in them every now and then. I assume it's allergies but the last couple days they have been so bad he can barely keep his eyes open and they look swollen. He has not gotten into any poisonous weeds or
He can have a possible infection or conjunctivitis since it is affected both eyes. Since the discharge is getting worse and he does not want to open his eyes, it is best he sees a vet to determine if there is a scratch on the cornea or just an infection. There is topical antibiotics +/- a steroid to help clear them. The only thing you can do at home is rinse with sterile eye wash and try to apply a warm compress to help with the swelling.

Basically if he was scratched in the eye he needs to see a vet ASAP to make sure there is no eye damage, if there is he will need antibiotic eye drops and corneal repair drops. in the meantime until you can take him to the vet you can apply artificial tear eye drops 3 times a day in this eye.

Hi so I noticed this on about Thursday and it looks to be the same no changes since then. Please tell me what this could be and how long it should take to go away. When should I go to the vet with this? Thank You
It can be very difficult to evaluate an eye based on a photo but it appears that there is a puncture or ulceration of the cornea in the corner of Rocky's eye. I would recommend taking him in to the vet as soon as possible. The vet will examine the eye, may want to put a special stain on the eye to check the rest of the cornea, may want to test the eye pressure, and can prescribe antibiotics and pain medication if needed. I would not delay taking him in because the eye can worsen quite quickly.

I have a four year old male Boxer whose eye is swollen shut. He been scratching at it and rubbing it on the carpet and his bed. He also has been scratching at his under arms to the point where his fur is gone
He looks to be generally itchy. I'm suspicious of allergies causing this, but it could be due to mange, fleas, or other causes. The eye may be a separate problem, or related to the allergies. Without seeing it, it's difficult to tell the cause of this, or the severity, but the fact that it's swollen shut warrants a visit to the vet. I recommend having him seen by a vet within the next 24 hours to prevent serious complications with the eye. The vet can also help narrow-down the cause of the itch and provide medication to help give him some relief. One thing you can do for itchy skin, is give a bath with cool water using an oatmeal or aloe shampoo. You can get these shampoos at the pet store. For now, you can flush the eye with normal saline. Saline flush can be bought at the pharmacy, or supermarket in the eye care section. Flush the eye 3-4 times daily and gently wipe away the discharge with a warm/moist cotton or cloth. My sisters dogs eye is really red and watering. She can hardly open it and she keeps blinking. I can't see anything in the eye.
She could have an infection, corneal scratch/ulcer, glaucoma, or possibly a foreign substance in her eye. She really needs to be examined by a vet to determine the cause. A vet can do a fluorescein stain to look for a scratch/ulcer on her conrea, measure the pressure of her eye, and look for signs of an infection. Once a diagnosis is made, the appropriate treatment can be started. She might need an antibiotic drop in her eye or other medications.

My dogs eye is swollen and it appears black or dark. She doesn't seem like she is in pain or it itches but it's definitely not opening all the way and every once in a while, she will rub it.
I consider any swelling of the eye to be an emergency. It may simply be a touch of conjunctivitis but potentially there could be damage to the cornea, or a similar more serious injury. You can soothe the eye with a cooled tea bag for immediate relief, but I would have it checked asap.

Angel needs to be seen by your veterinarian or at the nearest veterinary ER tonight. Any eye injury should be treated as a veterinary emergency. The injury should be addressed to avoid unnecessary pain, to prevent infection and to prevent permanent damage or loss of vision.
