My dog is losing hair in spots. Could it be mange or vaccine reaction?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 5 months and 5 days old | 25 lbs

My dog may have mange, although I have noticed she barely scrates the first area in which I noticed it so it may be subsiding. She also got her parvo vaccine and there is slight balding there as well, that is the second location. I'm so concerned and don't want to dry her skin with mange shampoo if she doesn't have it. Please help! Thank you so so much, many mahalos!

Aloha! The only way to know if Lani has mange is for a veterinarian to do a skin scrape on her to look for the mites responsible for mange. Once that has been diagnosed, then the appropriate medication will be Rx. Keep in mind there are two types of mange: demodex (non itchy with hairloss) and sarcoptes (itchy with hairloss). Do not apply any medication to Lani unless directed to do so by your veterinarian first! I hope this has helped!
