Is Cipro safe for a nursing dog with a fever after giving birth?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Great Dane | Female | unspayed | 2 years and 6 months old | 155 lbs

Is it safe to give Cipro antibiotics to nursing dogs? I have a female that gave birth 2 days ago and has had a shot of oxytocin to clean her out as well as an X-ray to make sure all is well. But yesterday she had a 103.4 temperature and it has ranged from 102.4-103.4 in the last 24 hours. She also has passed a good bit of stringy clotted blood in the last 24 hours.

In general, it is NOT recommended to give a nursing dog Cipro. We worry about cartilage defects in young dogs with Cipro, so I would be very worried about that with Great Dane puppies. I would contact your vet about her temperature and cinical signs and see if they recommend having her examined. I hope that helps. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach.
