My cat licked flea drops and is freaking out. Is it toxic?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | American Shorthair | Female | unspayed | 4 months and 2 days old | 2.5 lbs

My cat is about 5-6 months old and she is only an indoor cat and we don’t have any other pets but her. We were laying down and I saw a tiny black bug run across her white fur (she’s a shorthair cat) so I put Sentry Purrscription Indoor drops on her and now she won’t stop licking her fur and freaking out when she gets the bad taste in her mouth. I am really scared it’s going to make her sick or kill her.

Hi there! The product you placed on her has a few essential oils in it but nothing else. These are generally not toxic but could cause an upset stomach if ingested. The only worry I would have is the product not working as non of these oils in the product are efficacious in treating and preventing fleas in cats. I would try a Rx from your veterinarian. If Bell appears very irritated with the product on her, then I'd give her a bath to wash off the oils. A product called Revolution or Comfortis works very well. You may to ask your vet about getting Bell on either one of those or something similar.
