My dog has hives and swollen face from meds, can't afford vet. Help!

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Mastiff | Female | unspayed | 150 lbs

I gave my dog new hot spot medication yesterday and she ended up with a bunch of huge hives. I gave her some Benadryl hoping it would help and her face was swollen by morning so I gave her an oatmeal bath with an aveeno eczema bath powder made for humans. Her face keeps swelling bigger and bigger and my parents have no money to take her to the vet. What should we do?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I think you should find a low cost clinic that is part of an SPCA. Maxi really needs to see a Vet for steroids. If benadryl isn't working she need more. I am sorry you are going through this but she will be fine in the end. Steroids are inexpensive and most exam fees are $50. It may only cost $75-90. I wish you the best of luck

Hi there. If your pet is or you suspect may have trouble breathing soon-if is time to head to the vet. Likely Maxi will need injectable steroids as well as antihistamines to counter the reaction. As far as over the counter, you can call your vet (for dosing and administration specifications) on over the counter, considered safe medications, like off label use of Benadryl. (We cannot give you dosages or recommendations on drugs due to having not seen your pet and the nature of our company, as it will go against prescribing laws). I hope she feels better soon!
