Is my mixed-breed dog underweight? How to tell ideal weight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Female | spayed | 25 lbs

My dog is a German Shepard/ Border collie mix. She is almost 2 years old and is in perfect health(minus some dry skin from the heat). We got her from the pound when she was a puppy. She is the runt of the litter. She has all her shots up to date, is chipped, and has been spayed. My question is what should her ideal weight and size be? I did research on her breed and they are typically 60-80 pounds. She is only 25 and is medium to small in size. She is regularly fed and we keep her bowl filled.

What a cutie! It's hard to tell from the picture, but she looks like she's at an ideal weight. Rather than tell you an exact number she should weigh, I think it's beneficial to explain what to look for to know that her body condition is ideal. At an ideal weight, you should be able to run your fingers over her sides and feel the indents between the ribs without pushing in. If you see her ribs, she is too thin. Looking down on her when she's standing, she should have a little indent in her waist. Monitor both of these things to make sure she maintains an ideal weight.
