My puppy won't stop biting. What else can I do to train him?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 30 days old | 21.8 lbs

How do I curb Deuce's biting? I have tried diverting his attention to other toys, saying "ouch" really loud and getting up, walking away and ignoring him. I have been doing that for quite a while consistently but he will not stop biting. Is there anything else I can do?

Instead of you walking away, "banish" him to another room whenever he bites. Don't use his crate, if he has one, for this. You can also spray a bitter agent, such as Bitter Apple or Phooey, on your hands, just remember to wash well before you eat or touch your face. Be patient, firm and consistent in your training. He's still young and has a way to go in learning good behaviors.

The best thing you can do to stop a puppy from biting is to remove attention as soon as the puppy starts to bite. So, as soon as the puppy starts to get excited and exhibit biting behavior you should walk away and ignore him until he is calm again. Your puppy will soon learn that he does not get any attention when he bites and this will be a powerful learning tool for him. You can also provide him with appropriate toys to bite and chew like a Kong stuffed with treats. If he continues to bite I'd recommend finding a trainer or veterinary behaviorist to work with you on proper training techniques. Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach and good luck with your puppy!

Puppies tend to partially stop biting around the age of 5 months when they are done teething. aggressiveness is another issue, you should get him professional training fro that and you should get him neutered at the age of 6 months.
