My dog's ears get warm after playing. Is this normal for dogs?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Male | neutered | 1 year and 5 months old | 80 lbs

For the last few nights my dogs ears have become quite warm. He has not displayed any signs of illness. He is acting normal, eating well, and quite playful. Sometimes he will pant a bit longer in the evenings and then I will check his ears and they will be warmer than normal. No sign of swelling, discharge or redness in the ears. In the morning the ears are back to normal and usually cool. He tends to play pretty hard in the evenings and takes a while to get cooled down. Is this normal?

I love the name Forrest! Red or warm ears alone, with no signs of itching, infection, debris or illness, would not worry me. If he was having heavy panting or his exercise tolerance was decreased, I may want to do further investigation however. I hope this helps!
