My puppy is constipated. She has to strain herself for sometime before she poops rock solid stool. I've learnt that psyllium husk powder help relieve constipation. Can you tell me how many teaspoons should I mix with his food?? Also how many dosage should do it??

I am very sorry to hear about your puppy. We do occasionally use psyllium hydrophilic mucilloid (such as metamucil) for mild constipation in pets. In a small pet we would normally start with 1 teaspoon (5ml) daily added to food and may increase to several teaspoons if needed. We also sometimes use canned pumpkin for constipation. I would, however, recommend seeking a veterinary exam for your puppy as severe constipation is not normally seen in a dog this age. Also, if your puppy has lethargy, decreased appetite, vomiting, or pain when having the bowel movement these would be signs to seek veterinary care.

If Jessi is straining and unable to produce much stool I would recommend a vet visit to make sure she does not have an obstruction or other medical problem. If she is only constipated with no other problems I would recommend make sure she is on a high quality puppy formula food and add a bit Of water to her food. You can also add canned pumpkin or psyllium at about a teaspoon per day to her food but if it isn't helping within a few days she definitely needs a vet visit.
