My dog fears male dogs after a bite. How can I help her get along?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 1 year and 4 months old | 23.5 lbs

My dog use to have a behavior problem with dogs because she was bit by a bigger male dog. She has improved a bunch after I took her to a dog trainer. To this day, she approaches dogs very well now, female dogs are her preference, but I have noticed when it's a male dog she has a bit more trouble getting along with them. I think it's because a Male dog bit her when she was young. How can I help her get along with boy dogs the same way she does with female dogs?

It is awesome that you have worked with a trainer to help Panda get over her anxiety and fear. I would recommend continuing to work with the trainer. It is a slow process but I would try to find some friends with male dogs and schedule play dates in a controlled setting. I would start off with 1 dog that she gets along with and slowly introduce others. Sometimes dogs are more scared or anxious around others because of previous experiences.
