Why is my Chihuahua trembling, licking, and getting dark skin spots?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Chihuahua | Female | spayed | 7 years and 1 month old | 15 lbs

My Chihuahua Mix is 13 lbs and 7 yrs old. I have stopped feeding her ANY people food. At present she is eating wet dog food. Brands are 'by nature' and 'Zignature'. Where the hind quarters rub against her belly, the skin is darkening.. She licks at her fur, She trembles quite often now and she never used to. She has broken out in dark spots on her neck, outside of her hind quarters and in the chest area. Do you have any thoughts as to what might be going on with her? Thanks

This can definitely be cause by an allergy, but infection or mites are possible. First of all, I would recommend to have her treated with a good parasite treatment to rule out fleas. Then I would recommend a check up as infections and mites can be ruled out easily with some skin testing (skin scrape). If these tests are negative allergy must be treated and diagnosed. Flea allergy dermatitis, food allergy and environmental one are most common. Steroids and antibiotics may e needed, but other meds with fewer side effects are available nowadays (Apoquel for example).
