My new 8-week-old puppy isn't eating. Is this normal or serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Pembroke Welsh Corgi | Male | unneutered | 1 month and 28 days old | 8 lbs

I picked up my 8 week old puppy on Saturday and he's been doing great with his crate and sleeping and potty training but for both lunch and dinner yesterday he didn't eat his full recommended meal and this morning he didn't want any food at all. I'm going to try giving him his lunch in half an hour but I checked to see if he was interested in his food a couple times after when he would normally get breakfast but he wasn't interested at all. He hasn't seemed particularly lethargic when awake.

Hi there! Thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Yoshi! Decreased appetite is concerning in a puppy because of the potential very serious gastrointestinal infections such as parvovirus that they can get. Monitor him closely for progression of his already decreased appetite, nausea (which may manifest as drooling, decreased appetite and lip smacking), vomiting, severe lethargy and/or diarrhea. If any of these signs are observed, have him evaluated right away. I think that if he is otherwise doing fine, then it is ok to monitor him for now. If he has not improved by tomorrow, then have him evaluated by your veterinarian. Make sure that he is drinking water to avoid dehydration. Good luck! Keeping my fingers crossed for a speedy recovery!
