My puppy pees too much after pad training. Is he sick or wants treats?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | West Highland White Terrier | Male | unneutered | 2 months and 22 days old

To house train our puppy we have used training pads (he is not yet allowed outside due to not have full vaccinatinations) and gave him a treat every time he did his business in the right place. He now never goes anywhere but his training pad and we stopped giving him treats in preparation for him to get used to go outside instead in the future. We have noticed that recently he pees essesively: he can go up to 10 times in an hour. Shall we be concerned? Or is he juts 'fishing' for a treat?

Puppies are very smart, and it is quite possible the Niko is looking for more treats! When training puppies to use a potty pad, there is always the risk that they will decide that they only like using a potty pad and will not consider going on grass or concrete outside. Unless your vet specifically said to not let Niko go outside at all, it is perfectly safe for him to do so. I would recommend that you choose an area where other dogs do not visit, and stay away from public parks or the pet store. Going out for walks and exploring grass is important for their development and will help with leash training. Puppies that have never been on grass can be scared of it for life when they are adults! I would recommend that you find a "safe" spot for Niko to start doing his business outside. Start treats outside for pottying and do not give treats inside. You may have to start by taking him outside every 4 hours. I would do this for a week. If you still feel like he is over-urinating, then he should get checked out by a vet. Occasionally, there can be a congenital defect where the ureter attaches to the wrong place in the bladder and can cause increased urination.
