My cat has been coughing lately and it almost sounds like a duck. What may this be?

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Libby! Coughing in cats is most commonly caused by asthma or an upper respiratory infection, but since Libby is 16 years old other possibilities are heart failure or cancer. I recommend you have her looked at by your Vet and have X-rays of her lungs done. Depending on the findings they may send her home with antibiotics and or steroids. Good luck!

I'm sorry to hear Libby is having coughing issues. There can be multiple causes for coughing in cats, such as an upper respiratory infection, feline asthma, heart disease, or a cancer of some kind. I would recommend she be evaluated by her regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for her coughing, have any necessary testing done (X-rays, bloodwork) and get started on any treatment she may need. Good luck!
