My cat licked raw egg yolk. Should I be worried about food poisoning?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | American Bulldog | Male | neutered | 5 years and 10 months old | 45 lbs

My cat jumped on the counter this morning while I was making breakfast and had a few licks of raw egg yolk when I wasn't looking. Should I be worried?

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. Just like you or I, licking a bit of raw egg could be harmless (just like eating a bit of raw batter), however you can always be unlucky and get a nasty food poisoning. So, likely your kitty will be fine, and I would recommend just monitoring for now. If your cat starts vomiting, is sore, weak, having diarrhea, then it might be gastritis or food poisoning from the egg, which would require some medications and a vet visit to fix up. Just monitor for now though, as likely it will be fine. Best of luck!
