My dog threw up Doxycycline. Is it absorbed? When's the next dose?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 1 year and 4 months old | 55 lbs

Spock was given Doxycycline at 6:45 am with food. We played a lot between then and 8:15 am. At 8:15 he threw up his food. Didn't see antibiotic. But the vet won't answer I left a message but I'm unsure what to do. I know it can make dogs nauseous. He's been fine on it otherwise. Do I wait until his next dose and should it have been dissolved already?

Yes in two hours the tablet should have been absorbed and dissolved already. This medication must be given with food and water as well as can cause oesophageal inflammation. I would suggest to wait until next dosage and I would suggest to withhold food for the next 8 hours and then start feeding with a bland diet based on boiled chicken and rice in small portion every 6 hours for the following 48hours. Then gradually reintroduce the normal diet over 5 days. I would definitively recommend a veterinary check up if the signs persist or you notice diarrhoea, more vomiting, lethargy or inappetence. It can make your dog a bit nauseous or may cause vomiting and/or diarrhea. It can be given with or without food, but giving it with food may decrease any side effects. Do not give it with any dairy products. If you didn't see the pill, you can wait until his next dose.
