My dog's congested nose bleeds when she clears it. Why won't she eat?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Shepherd | Female | spayed | 1 year old | 32 lbs

My dog has not been eating much but is drinking water often, her nose is very congested, she does this thing that sounds like she is trying to clear her nose but when she does it she sometimes bleeds from her nostrils. she was just adopted and went to the clinic and was told she was healthy. She does sneeze often and mucus goes flying. Mucus goes from a yellowish brown color to sometimes clear.

HI, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Cherry! It sounds like she has an upper respiratory infection. The blood may be from inflammation in her sinuses. Other causes for a congested, bloody nose are: foreign body, fungal infections, tumors or clotting disorders. Cheery may not be eating because she can't smell the food well. I recommend taking her to the Vet again. They may want to run blood work to check her white blood cell count and platelets. They may prescribe an antibiotic and an antihistamine. Good luck!
