Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Labrador Retriever | Female | unspayed | 1 year and 7 months old | 30 lbs

Could my pup possibly have mange ? If so is it contagious to humans and or other animals? Is the rumor that motor oil will cute it ? If so, is it okay to use if she has torn skin on certain areas from itching by biting ?

If she is very itchy and has torn skin, then it's definitely possible that she has mange. Otherwise, she has some other skin condition that really needs professional help. It is best if you can get her to a veterinary surgeon. They will be able to identify the cause of the problem and provide the best treatment. It is not true that motor oil will cure mange and it's very dangerous to attempt this. Certain types of mange (sarcoptic) can be contagious to people and will usually cause red, itchy bumps on your arms. Zoey will need special treatment from a veterinarian to clear this. If you cannot afford to go to a veterinarian, then there are usually rescue groups around that can help with veterinary treatment. Again, it's very important that she sees a vet - this condition is very irritating and painful for dogs and they feel much better when they get treatment.
