My dog still coughs weeks after aspiration pneumonia. Is it litter?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Female | spayed | 20 lbs

My dog is recently getting over aspiration pneumonia she finished antibiotics 3 weeks ago. Often though she is still couching like she has something stuck in her throat, no vomiting at all. I also have a hard time keeping her from eating cat litter out of the box so I wonder if it just could be from that or still the pneumonia either with it doesn't seem to be slowing her down.

I am sorry to hear about Sadie. If she finished her antibiotics three weeks ago and is still coughing I would definitely let her vet know and if she didn't have an x-ray after finishing her antibiotics I would recommend an x-ray now. We don't usually see dogs cough as a result of ingesting cat litter (and plenty of them do that!), so I would be concerned either the pneumonia isn't resolved or there is another underlying condition we need to treat.
