My senior diabetic Shih Tzu won't drink or urinate. Is it serious?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 9 years old | 15 lbs

My shih tsu is 9 years old, has diabetes, and cataracts in both eyes. In the last couple days he won't drink water or urinate. Last time he did urinate was about 2:00 this morning. I'm really worried about him. I am taking him to his vet tomorrow. Can you please possibly help ease my mind for tonight? Thank you.

Poor Quintino! I am definitely concerned about his lack of urination. Hopefully his diabetes has been well regulated, but that would be a concern. A urinary tract infection or a bladder stone would also be a possibility. If he is very lethargic you may need to take him to the emergency vet tonight to be evaluated.
