My senior diabetic dog has accidents. Is it kidneys or cognitive?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Dachshund miniature | Male | neutered | 12 years and 1 month old | 15 lbs

Is testing/ diagnosing kidney disease straight forward and inexpensive? I have a diabetic 12yo dachshund. He had bad teeth, since extracted and cleaned. On insulin 2x day. He is regularly urinating and defecating in the house, including in his crate. I try to get him out every few hours but sometimes he won't go, until he's back in the house. We've tried Proin medicine to no avail. He seems thirsty although not as bad as before we found out he's diabetic. Kidneys or cognitive?

Hello, sorry to hear about Roscoe. This could be either of the two you mentioned, although there are still other things you need to consider such as uncontrolled diabetes. Bloodwork and a urinalysis may suffice in telling you wether Roscoe has kidney disease or uncontrolled diabetes or a urinary tract infection. If bloodwork and urinalysis come back negative then you could consider that this may be a cognitive disease. Other things that may be preventing him from urinating or defecating outside include any orthopedic or muscle pain. Especially if Roscoe has any arthritis on his back, hips or knees, he may be hesitant to posture to relieve himself due to pain. X-rays would and a physical exam would be best at detecting these. Hope this helps and best of luck
