My dog is throwing up after camping. Does he need an emergency vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | unneutered | 22 lbs

While camping yesterday my dog must have gotten into something and has been eating a ton of grass, dry heaving and throwing up off and on for 24 hours now. Should I get him into an emergency vet place or is there something I could do for him?

Hi, I am sorry to hear about Ranger. Based on Ranger's clinical symptoms it is most likely that he ingested something while camping that has greatly upset his stomach. Since he is persistently vomiting he will soon become dehydrated. I am sure he feels pretty ill. If possible, I would highly recommend to have him seen by an emergency veterinarian today so they can stop his nausea and provide insight as to why he is so suddenly so ill. I hope he is feeling better soon.

Hi there! Sorry to hear that Ranger is not feeling well! I think you have a fair concern. He could have gotten into something that upset his belly and now is experiencing some form of dietary indiscretion and gastrointestinal upset. The main thing is ruling out a foreign body ingestion as that can be serious or other possible things like kidney damage from a potential toxicity from exposure to something while camping. I think ideally you have Ranger evaluated today so that those possibilities can be ruled out with some bloodwork and radiographs. If not that then at the very least the veterinarian can assess if he is dehydrated and provide fluids if he is and start him on anti-nausea medications. Good luck! Keeping my fingers crossed for your boy!
