My Doberman collapsed and died. Was it heart attack or poison?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Doberman Pinscher | Male | neutered | 8 years and 5 months old

My dog died suddenly yesterday morning. He was out in the patio and collapsed while walking towards the main door of the house. We searched for any wound or bite marks but couldn't find any. His tongue turned blue in few minutes. After he collapsed we tried feeding him some salt water but he couldn't gulp it. He was a 8.5 yrs old healthy doberman. Is the death due to heart attack or poison?

I'm so sorry to hear about Shadow. How terrible! There are a number of things that can potentially cause such a sudden death, but sudden heart failure would be towards the top of the list, as dobermans are prone to a heart condition called dilated cardiomyopathy, which can suddenly progress with no obvious prior symptoms. Other possibilities would include a ruptured mass/tumor, or a toxin. If it would be helpful to have more information about the cause of death, most vets are willing to perform a necropsy (animal version of an autopsy) for a reasonable price. You could call your local vet and ask if this is something they offer. Please accept my condolences on the sudden loss of Shadow. I hope this helps.
