Why is my healthy 10-year-old dog suddenly whining and crying?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Male | neutered | 25 lbs

Hello, my staffie cross is 10 years old and has started whining and crying a lot of the time, he saw the vet at the beginning of the year because of a skin tag,had it remove, was given an excellent clear health check the vet said nothing was wrong was him apart from the usual age related fat lumps which I had tested for cancer and came back clear, what could be causing his whining please I thought it could be because we introduced cats but they all get along, he's still eating, drinking + walking

Hello and welcome to Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach. I am sorry that Dodge is having these issues. Whining and crying is often due to pain or stress. If he is still eating and drinking well, and not having any other issues then it could be that he has arthritis and that is causing some pain or discomfort. Try to keep a journal of when he is crying/whining including time of day, as well as what he did that day (did he have a big walk, was he outside or inside all day, did he do a lot of stairs that day, what food did he eat that day, did he get a lot of treats that day, etc) This will help determine what the problem is. This information will help your vet determine the problem. Best of luck with Dodge.
