What should I feed my underweight rescued cat to help him gain weight?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Maine Coon | Male | unneutered | 8 lbs

We have a poor stray cat that we are trying to help. We have looked for his owner but have been unable to find them so we have decided to give him a forever home with us. We have taken him to our vet where he was given IV fluids and wormed. The vet told us the kitty is a male, 6-7 yrs, not nutered and a Maine coon. We have named him leo. He only weighted about 8 pounds/ 4.7 kgs. The problem is we are finding difficult to put weight on him. I am not sure if we are feeding him correctly.

How lovely of you to take in Leo and look after him! I would be feeding him a high quality cat food, such as Royal Canin, Hill's Science diet, Purina ProPlan, or Iams. Feed him according to the package instructions on the food label. You can speak to your vet to see if they feel feeding him more than what the label recommends is appropriate, or if a prescription weight gain diet would be beneficial. I hope this helps!
