New adopted puppy has green snot and sneezes. Should I see a vet?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | spayed | 20 lbs

We adopted two puppies from a shelter about a week and a half ago. They had new puppy exams, were given some routine puppy vaccinations and treated for tape worms and declared overall healthy besides the worms. Since the appt both of our pups have green nasal discharge that becomes especially runny when sleeping, accompanied by some occasional sneezing. What would you recommend would be best for us to do at this point? Should we schedule to see our vet again?

It's not uncommon that these shelter pups end up with an upper respiratory infection and it looks like Raven and Scarlette got it. These are usually mild diseases, but can be controlled with medication. I would call the shelter soon and ask if you can schedule with their vet. Often, the adoption agreements allow for a two-week time period where you can bring the dog back for veterinary treatment. I hope that helps and good on you for adopting rather than buying.
