My cat is still in pain. Can I give buprenorphine early or CBD?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Longhair | Male | neutered | 11.9 lbs

My cat got medication( Buprenorphine 0.3 for pain on Thursday due to an under tongue tumor. The vet told me to not give him the next dosage until Sunday morning, but as in right now he seems to be in pain to the point that he can not eat his wet food. Is it bad If I give him the pain killer now or should I wait until tomorrow Sunday? His jaw is shaking up and down. Also would CBD could be helpful for his pain? The medication make him feel disoriented, restless plus other symptoms. Please help :(

I would follow the recommendations that your vet gave you for the buprenorphine. Overdosage can cause worsening of the disoriented feeling, including extreme lethargy and inability to move. There have not been any published studies on the use of CBD in pets, yet. Anecdotally, some owners that have used it have felt that it helps with pain. There are no safe dosages known, though, so at this time I cannot safely recommend its use. If you feel like Cucho is still in a lot of pain, then I recommend he be seen by an emergency vet. Based on records you might have and the medications that were prescribed, the vet can prescribe additional pain medications to help with his comfort.
