Considering cataract surgery for my diabetic dog: success & risks?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Shih Tzu | Male | neutered | 9 years old | 15 lbs

My dog is diabetic and he was recently diagnosed with cataracs. I'm considering having the cataracs removed. He is 9 yrs. old today. Ever since he was unable to see he's been very depressed. He wants to be with me 24/7. My question is, how successful is this surgery? And what are the risks? Thank you.

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Quintino! I have had patients have successful cataract surgery after being diagnosed with diabetes. The owners have been very happy and feel that their dog's quality of life was improved. Success rates are about 90-95% per eye 6 months after surgery. Complications (the 5-10%) can be imperfect but improved vision, or inflammation that requires long-term medication, glaucoma and/or retinal detachment. Complications can lead to loss of the eye in about 1% of cases. I hope this helps. Good luck!
