My dog yelped when I touched her swollen red armpit. What's wrong?

Hello. I just got home today and was saying hello to my 8 year old pooch. When she suddenly yelped when I touched under her armpit. I looked and (I think) her gland looked very swollen and red in color. It's possible she was picking at it also. It hang down a little like extended skins. I'm very worried this something very serious. She's not lethargic at all, very healthy weight, eating normal, bowels normal, and seems in good spirits. Any advice for now would be wonderful.

Hello, sorry to hear about Lokina. The area definitely looks red and irritated with some hair loss like she may have been scratching it. As long as she is otherwise acting like her normal self and she is not bleeding or has a cut through her skin more towards the inside of her armpit then perhaps it does not need to be seen today. Things that may have caused that are things like insect bites, a tight fitting harness, scratching or getting cut with something, or fleas. If the area does not get better by tomorrow, or if she develops lethargy, a decreased appetite, or if she feels hot, the swelling worsens, or it becomes increasingly painful, then I would bring her to your veterinarian to have her evaluated. Best of luck and hope this helps.
