A stray cat scratched me. When should I worry and see a doctor?

Hi...I live in a neighborhood where we have a lot of stray cats. One cat in particular frequents my home often...as I carried her, as I often do, something spooked her and she jumped off me scratching me multiple times. She did cause slight bleeding from the abrasions...immediately I cleansed with Hydrogen Peroxide and applied Neosporin. Should I worry further?

Unfortunately as vets, we cannot offer human medical advice because we are not trained to do so. You did the right thing by cleaning the scratches and applying Neosporin, but I would follow up with your human doctor with any concerns you may have about it.

Hello, thank you for your question about Vinny. Depending on the severity of the scratch additional medications may be more beneficial/needed. While Neosporin is safe to use, if the scratch is deep or severe this may not contain enough antibiotics to prevent infection. I would recommend continuing to monitor the scratch. If it develops any odorous/white discharge or Vinny seems very painful in that area I would recommend having him seen by a veterinarian. Hope this helps, good luck!

The pictures are not coming out well, I can’t really see the wounds. We are not physicians and can not give human health advice. However cats can certainly have bacteria under their claws that can get into wounds and cause infections. A disorder called cat scratch fever exists which is a bacteria called bartonella. This causes fever and swollen lymph nodes as well. In general if you have any concerns a visit with your physician is very appropriate. Best of luck and thank you for using Pet Coach.

Poor guy. You can try a very small amount of Neosporin on this wound and clean it daily with sterile saline. However, if it doesn't heal well then a trip to your vet for antibiotics is needed. An antibiotic shot is available for cats that works really well for wounds like this. Best wishes with your cat Nicco and I hope this heals soon! Take care.

Cat scratches can transmit many infections, the most serious being 'cat scratch disease' from the bartonella bacteria. You should speak to your doctor/physician about your own wounds and although this scratch appears to be minor you should bathe it thoroughly with antiseptic and monitor for any redness, fever, swelling or leg pain

We found a stray kitten. It seems healthy except for a slightly proposed anus. It's been at our house for 4 days. It doesnt show classic signs of rabies. Yesterday it scratched my son under his eye. It was a very tiny scratch and didn't draw blood.
Thank you for submitting your question regarding your stray kitten. Signs of rabies in cats are neurological in origin. Affected cats can be aggressive, disoriented, wobbly when walking, drool and have difficulty swallowing. As veterinarians we are not allowed to give human medical advice. If the kittens has any of these symptoms or if you have concerns, you need to speak with your human physician. Rabies is a fatal disease unless prompt treatment is sought. If the wound on your knee is from a bite, then I would recommend seeking medical attention if it broke the skin into deeper tissues. Cat bites are notorious for getting severely infected even with proper treatment immediatey after the bite, so I would recommend contacting your doctor about antibiotics. If the puncture wound was a scratch, it can still get infected, but they are much less likely to be severe. In general there is always a risk of infection, as we are not human doctors, we can't give you any medical advise, but if you are concerned, make an apointment to see your GP so he can have a look at it and give you some treatment if needed.

today my cat bit me when i took her for injection....it was a punctured wound..just like a needle prick...i washed my hand and took a tetnus toxoid dose....is it okk???
Thanks for using Boop by Petco! Anyone who is bit by a cat should be evaluated by a physician. A cat's mouth is usually full of bacteria that can result in severe infections and cellulitis in humans that get bit. You should check with a local physician as soon as possible. Hello, and thank you for using Boop by Petco. Poor King! You did exactly right - keep the scratch clean with mild soapy water. You can also apply a small amount of neosporin to the scratch. It will likely heal just fine. Keep an eye on it for any signs of infection: redness, swelling, thick pus-like discharge, that would require a trip to the vet for antibiotics. Hope this helps!

No - cat scratch disease is a bacterial infection and rabies is a viral infection spread primarily from by bites from an infected animal and is quite rare from cats. You must contact your human doctor/physician for your own healthcare advice - your local doctor should be aware of the potential risks in your area and what, if any treatment is recommended.
