My 5-month-old puppy is coughing. Could it be kennel cough?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | English Springer Spaniel | Male | unneutered | 4 months and 13 days old | 18 lbs

My nearly 5 months dog sounds like he has something stuck in his throat and is trying to cough it out. Is it part of his bark maturing or something more serious?

I'm sorry to hear Arlo is having issues with coughing. While there can be multiple causes for the coughing you are seeing, I would be concerned that he contacted an upper respiratory infection such as kennel cough. I would recommend he be evaluated by his regular veterinarian to determine the underlying cause for his coughing, have any necessary testing done (X-rays) and get started on any treatment if needed (antibiotics, cough suppressant). Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! The most common reason for a hacking cough like something is stuck is Kennel Cough. Has Arlo been around other dogs recently either boarded, doggies day care, etc. Sometimes they cough so hard they hit their gag reflex and vomit white foam If Arlo is eating and drinking then watch him until your Vet opens monday. If he isn't feeling well then I recommend you have him evaluated tonight! Good luck!
