Why is my cat's anus red after litter box use? Is it diarrhea?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Cat | Domestic Shorthair | Male | neutered | 1 year and 3 months old | 12 lbs

Hi, I noticed some redness around my cat's anus right after he used the litter box. He doesn't seem to be in any pain whatsoever. Eating normally, no other symptom at all. He was on antibiotics few weeks ago and since then he has a bit of diarrhea. Already taking probiotic for it. So I'm just wandering if the redness can be from irritation or is it something else ?

Yes, the redness could be due to irritation, and from your picture (thank you for providing one!) it doesn't look excessively red . It looks like normal mucosa to me (the membrane that lines the anal cavity), and I would not be concerned about it :-)
