Could my pet's surgery cause kidney failure? What are the risks?

She can recover if the Kidney failure is due to her not being able to urinate. I would talk to your vet about placing a urinary catheter if they think she has any sediment that could be preventing her from urinating. If they think she is have spasms in her urethra (she is trying to pee but not much comes out), I have had good luck with prazosin. It helps to relax the urethral muscle. My biggest concern would be WHY she can't urinate. But it is great news and a great sign that she ate!!

No, this is absolutely not correct to say that. kidney failure can be cause by various reasons but in most cases the exact reason is unknown. when kidney failure is already present, dry food and food with high protein levels can cause the kidney failure to get worse faster.

Hello. The presence of only 1 kidney is a birth defect that can occur. If that kidney is fully functioning, as demonstrated by normal blood kidney values, & a normal urinalysis, then there is no reason that anesthesia will be any more of a concern then for a cat with 2 kidneys. I am not sure what you mean by an indifferent colon, other than if there is one congenital birth defect, other defects are possible. We had a case of a puppy born with a deformed hind leg, & when he was old enough for neutering, also found a completely abnormal reproductive tract as well as a deformed kidney. This dog is now 13 years old & going strong. Your kitty may require periodic blood work to make sure the kidney stays healthy, & possibly some type of special diet depending on how the colon actually affects the kitten's overall well being. Some anesthetic drugs can alter sugar levels in blood but it is usually a very minor change which does not cause any real health issues. the main problem is with fasting the dog before surgery, which is an issue with dogs with diabetes. the solution is usually to limit the fasting to 6 hours only.

In my experience it is not common, although possible, to have seizures after anesthesia and surgery. However there are many diseases that can cause seizures. Many of them are unrelated to surgery and could be coincidentally be causing your dogs's seizures. Some medications are such as ketamine, acepromazine,and related compounds are known to contribute to seizure potential. It is possible, but fairly rare, that something related to the surgery, anesthesia, or medications precipitated the seizures. You should keep looking into these things with your vet and consider referal to a veterinary neurologist if you and/or your vet are still concerned.

It is not likely that there is a connection between her medications for the chronic kidney failure and the synovial sarcoma. Synovial sarcomas are very aggressive soft tissue tumors that tend to metastasize as well. Thanks for using Boop by Petco! He could potentially undergo anesthesia. It is just a matter of being careful with the amount of time that he is under anesthesia and keeping it to a minimum and to watch that his blood pressure does not drop in the process. A castration is so quick that I would not be too concerned about this. I would recommend IV fluids all throughout the procedure. Best of luck!

I am sorry to hear about Grizelda. I wouldn't expect the anesthesia to make her aggressive and crazy, however, anesthesia in a cat with kidney disease is most definitely a risky endeavor. There is the chance that the kidneys could become further damaged, they can develop threatening heart arrhythmias under anesthesia, or acid-base abnormalities in the blood, and they can develop low blood pressure which can further damage the kidneys. Because of this, anesthesia is a definite risk and I would recommend any surgery be done by a specialist/internist at a referral hospital or teaching hospital which has a wider choice of drugs to use for anesthesia and also more extensive monitoring equipment.
