My older dog in heat whimpers when humped. Is her pain normal?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Medium (23 - 60lb) | Female | unspayed | 9 years and 11 months old

I think my female dog is in heat because she's been whimpering and is going crazy when male dogs are around. However, when she was being humped by a male dog, she is whimpering like she is hurt. Is this normal? This is the first time that she is humped by a male dog in her 9 years of living.

It is not uncommon for her to be uncomfortable if she has never been bred before. Most females will bleed when they are in heat and are most receptive to males for a few days during this time. Some females can have silent heats where there is no bleeding to tell you she's in heat, but she will still be receptive to the male. If she seems too uncomfortable with it or she is not receptive to the male, I would recommend separating them until she is out of heat.
