Why is my dog vomiting blood and grass? Should I be worried?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Mixed Breed Small (up to 22lb) | Male | neutered | 4 years old | 11 lbs

My dog (4 year old Shih Tzu-Poodle) just vomited twice. In his first vomit there was grass, but tiny blood "clots" were in there as well. In his second vomit there was no grass but still there were the blood "clots". I am wondering what is happening? I am very worried. Thank you!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! I'm sorry Bobo is sick! Bloody flecks usually indicates that the stomach lining is ulcerated. It can be from all the common reasons for vomiting: ate something gross, food sensitivity, viral or bacterial infection, pancreatitis, toxins, metabolic isssues or drug reaction. Try fasting her for 12-24 hrs then feed as "sip and nibble" of water and bland diet. Try boiled chicken or hamburger with rice. About 3/4 cup per day. If she continues to vomit while fasted or once you start feeding you should take her to the Vet. I hope this helps! Good luck!

Hi, thanks for using Petco Pet Education Center, formerly Petcoach! Poor Leo! Since Leo has been vomiting for 1-2 weeks low grade I think you should have him seen by your Vet Monday for an exam. The blood indicates gastric mucosa irritation or ulceration. Causes of vomiting are: foreign body ingestion (something is stuck), viral or bacterial infections, pancreatitis, food allergy or sensitivity, inflammatory bowel disease, dietary indiscretion (ate something gross that is upsetting his stomach), intestinal parasites, metabolic conditions like liver or kidney failure. After the Vet examines Leo they my recommend blood work and X-rays of his belly. After the tests are done they will recommend treatment based on the results. I hope this helps and I wish Leo a speedy recovery!

It sounds as Miley is suffering from a gastrointestinal condition, possibly an infection. it could also be due to ingestion of a foreign body material. i would recommend taking her to the vet the first chance you get, she will need to be checked first, if the vet thinks it's a simple gastrointestinal infection she will need an anti vomiting injection, antibiotics and a special food for a few days in order to get better. if the vet thinks it is more serious she will need a blood test and possibly an ultrasound in order to find out what is wrong.
