My old dog has bowel and bladder incontinence. What can I do?

Updated On September 23rd, 2025

Pet's info: Dog | Australian Cattle Dog | Male | neutered | 14 years and 8 months old | 40 lbs

I'm researching canine bowel incontinence. Having a very hard time with my old guy, not sure when/how to draw the line. finding polar opposite advise on line and with my vet. bloodwork is fine, no problems with internal organs, but bowel incontinence started 2 days ago. bladder is full incontinent. luckily i work at home, no kids, and cleanup isn't a burden, he has twin bed. difficult to say least. i'm not sure if its meds/diet I can adjust or just time. he's on high fiber diet and lactulose.

Hi there and thank you for your post! In regards to Paco, fecal incontinence cannot be treated per se due to aging. IF there is a primary problem that is causing it such as intestinal parasites or diarrhea, than that can certainly be treated. Due to age, however, it is difficult to stop this. You can try omega 3 fish oil and melatonin to help with cognition and maybe help with the fecal incontinence but this will likely not help much with the defecation. Most of the time, I have clients buying disposable diapers to managing the condition that way.
